Daily Discoveries

In the Classroom

Daily Discoveries is a nature and art based learning community that serves children & adolescents in collaborative & creative, environment-based learning. Nature encourages children to explore, discover, and experience with all of their senses, helping them to reach their creative capacities. At Daily Discoveries, everyone is both a learner and a teacher, everyone is fully valued for who they are, and everyone has a meaningful voice in shaping our community.

Why a Nature Experience for Small Children?

Cognitive & Physical Skills

When observing wildlife, children grow in their cognitive skills. This becomes apparent when recording and making notes in a diary, which is encouraged. Activities in nature promote gross motor skills, in particular when climbing trees, walking up and down hill, jumping over puddles, and building tree huts.

Imagination

Due to the lack of ready-made elements outdoors, creativity and imagination are naturally encouraged during activities. The diversity, changeability and complexity of the natural ecosystem stimulates motivation for independent activity. Roaming on a trail or other preserved open spaces can satisfy the natural need for adventure, exploration and experimentation.

Connection

When noticing or interacting with animals we might come across, children take on responsibility, empathy, and relationships develop that increase the child’s self-esteem.
